Hello meggers - anyone know how to tighten the handbrake? I need to take up some slack for the MOT and can't find any info on it!

I believe that on the Mk1 and Mk2 Mondeo's there is a 10mm nut under the cover thats above the handbrake

MK2 the adjustment is self adjusting which never self adjusts. Usually because of worn or seized adjuster. There is plenty of info on here how to do this. Do you have discs on the back or drums? If its drums then what i have said above will generally apply. Once the road wheels are off your going to need to remove the drums. Use a heavy duty Hyde mallet as they can sometimes be a pain to remove. hit the face of drum top and bottom side to side. eventually the drum will budge. Once removed check the drum for tram lines or scoring. Check the lip on the outer part of the inside of the drum if the lip is deep replace the drums, also the same if you have bad score lines. If there is a slight lip you can take this off with a file or angle grinder. Take care doing this. Check the shoes they may need replacing. It also makes sense to replace the wheel cylinders. You only want to do this job once. If there is any brake fluid residue around the cylinder or around the boot replace the cylinders. This is an easy job providing you get the right spanner size. Just put a pair of mole grips on the rubber brake hose and undo the brake pipe from the cylinder.I can give more in depth info how to do this. Anyway once your shoes are off take the adjuster on the top of the shoe and spray some wd -40 or alike onto the moving parts and free them up. Check for any worn teeth. I usually replace this adjuster as i have come across some which have been very worn.Apply some copper slip around the moving parts. Once your shoes are back on adjust the handbrake on the adjuster. Take your shoes make sure it is adjusted so that you can barely get the drum on. Make sure you remove the lip inside the drum.
