Noticed today that water is coming out from where the Thermostat housing meets the head, took it off and there seems to be a chunk missing out the bottom where it should seal, anyone got a photo of this bit so i can compare?

Also how much to replace housing??

Hi TLM

deffo not where the sensor goes, took the housing off the head and its where the rubber ring gasket seals against the head there is a groove for the ring to sit in and the bottom of the groove and the housing had a 1cm square chunk missing. looks like someone fitted a longer than necessary rubber ring to try and fill the gap.

For 32 quid is that the whole housing or just the front part that you remove to change the stat. I need the whole thing

Did you change anything or replace anything recently if not it looks like the person before you tightened it up a little to much... and over time has rattled itself free matey..

Go and purchase another one :L :L

I've had my 2000 mk2 since almost new and my thermostat housing started leaking last year. It had been using a very small amount of coolant for a couple of years, but not enough to worry me greatly. I had exactly the same problem as yours and the rubber sealing ring was pushed out through the gap. I think it was overtightened at manufacture and it took a few years for the rubber to fail.

Just a word of warning - when I put the new housing on, the sealing ring on the old temp sender was too small for the hole, so it was a trip back to Ford to get a new one.

thing is you really need to work out what broke it in the first place. Was it a crack that grew, or was it like something hit it. Need to figure that out before you do anything else though otherwise your going to have a life of buying thermo housings
