I've used a couple of regas kits (not Halfords ones but just the same) they are only any good if you are sure your system has no leaks.
I've used it on 2 mondys with non working aircon, one of them it fixed and is still working ok (system must of been down on pressure) whilst the other it made no difference so probably had a leak on the system somewhere, evaporator leaks are fairly common on Mondeos.
p.s. have a look on EBAY for the kits they are much cheaper than the Halfords ones.
I have the same problem on my modeo - 2.0 Ghia '51 plate.
Plenty of gas in the system (£60 is a bit steep for a re-gas - shop around - I've seen £35)
I'm thinking clutch or whatever controls it
ps if it's a new compressor - you'll need to sell a kidney on ebay to pay for it :}
used one of these kits on my mk2 and they are fine if you have no leaks. they top up and oil the system and you can check the pressure quite easy too. would concider one only if your sure you dont have a leak or its money wasted,
It's the valve just in front of the battery. Unscrew the little plastic cap and you're away. Under no circumstances use the valve by the O/S headlamp. This is the high pressure side and it'll take your head off :tonofbricks:
