Hi Guys and Gals,

I have a problem. My speedometer has stopped working.

Took it to a friend of my boyfriend who plugged in some machine and said one of the ABS sensors had conked out and that could be causing the problem but he couldn't say which one as the machine to do that costs about a billion pounds. Anyway, took it to a proper garage and he said it was probably the worm gear in the gearbox had stripped and yet another garage said that was rubbish as it was electronic so.......HELP.....PLEASE. It may be old but it's my baby - lol.

So, anybody have any ideas as to how the thing works? Is it electronic or mechanical and what could be the problem? Oh, the fuse is ok; that was checked.

Any help gratefully accepted.

Luv'n'hugs

Have you checked the speedo to see if its cable driven or electronic only?

A sub £20 OBD reader should tell you which sensor. I have a dongle that cost £4

that would do the job but buying them is hit and miss.

£20 will get one that will do the job is its an ABS sensor issue.

But useless if its cable driven.

What year/spec etc. is the car?

What else does not work or what else is causing an issue? ABS light on?

Does the ABS light work is the ABS working?

Early cars had a cable driven speedo. I thought they all had cable driven speedo;s

with a cable at the rear of the gearbox.

Your problems and warning lights does suggest they are using the ABS for the speedo

pickup though.

With the Mondeo etc it uses the left front ABS sensor for the speed signal.

Where in the UK are you? You could do with forscan. With the abs light being on it would suggest it's definitely a speed sensor on 1 of the wheels, good news is its a cheap fix once you find which one it is....

If you're local I'll pop over and plug it in. Being as the ka and fiesta share the same platform I can pretty much guarantee its electronic and not cable driven
