i upgraded to auto dimming mirror a while ago but i don't think it's as effective as other cars with them and i suspect it's because of the tint on rear glass.

i think i understand the working principle - front sensor detects ambient light level, rear sensor does glare and they do some comparative thing and adjust the dimming accordingly.

with the tint partially reducing the glare input, would it work if i put a translucent sticker or something in front of the front sensor?

i don't mind it being a bit darker than not dark enough - but preferably not running all the time, although the power consumption would be fairly negligible.

I haven't really noticed and change in mine with tinted windows, the mirror still auto tints when bright lights are behind me but the window tint works as an anti glare layer anyway so bright lights are not really a problem.

 

If your mirror is not tinting, have you checked its getting the feed from the headlights, it wont tint unless your lights are on and it knows they are on.

 

My rear tints are 20% VLT.

Hmm interesting - I don't think headlight feed is hooked up, just positive and ground.

I'm sure it does work but not very well - I'll look at the wiring diagram.

Haynes manual has 3 wires going to the mirror - 1. ignition, 2. ground & 3. reverse switch. I remember someone saying when reverse is selected it turned off dimming to help see behind better.

Mine has the reverse feed disconnected as I don't use the mirror when I reverse.

 Hmm, maybe mine is wired differently then (it is factory fitted and not fitted later), my mirror does nothing untill my headlights are on and I see it dim during the day when I switch them on.

 

I thought my old mk3 did the same but I can't be sure.

 

In any case, my rear windows being tinted do a great job on thier own at reducing glare, they probably influence how dark my mirror gets but it would probably be too dark if it went full tilt because of my windows already being dark.

Yes Craig gave me the inspiration to upgrade the mirror. I think I pretty much followed his video.

I'll watch it again.

I don't think he has tinted windows by the way.
