I expected all three opening methods (interior s/w, tailgate mounted s/w & remote s/w) would use the one and the same wiring but obviously this is not the case?
E.g. Battery +12V -> switches (in parallel) -> solenoid -> ground.
In case of remote s/w, +12V -> remote receiver -> solenoid-> ground.
Am I missing something?

On my hatchback the interior switch on the console worked after changing
drivers door lock module.

The switch in the handle and the interior switch are on the same connection.
If one switch is activated or a wiring fault then neither switch will work.
As above also the drivers door lock can cause boot opening issues.

I've been pulling apart the tailgate - the tailgate switch seems buggered. what happens is with the switch disconnected, dash switch works. when reconnecting the tailgate s/w, it operates the solenoid but that's it, it doesn't work any more.
I was going to disconnect the tailgate lock and install a private lock but there are no holes pre-punched. I was of understanding all pre-facelift had the holes, regardless whether a private lock has been fitted to a particular car. I guess I was wrong again.

well, thank god for the time difference so i managed to sort of figure it out before you guys could...
it appears that the rubber membrane for the tailgate switch somehow jammed it "on", which explains the solenoid working when disconnected and then re-connected. there must be a protection circuit or something so that continuous press doesn't register.
i don't know how the membrane jammed it in though, it was still flexible and wasn't caught on anything...

looking back, i made a few rambling posts of tailgate switches and private lock...
raykar posted a photo of a cutout he had to make to retrofit a lock back then so thanks!

If you're interested, somewhere on this site is/was an account of how to replace the switch in the tailgate with a microswitch from an old pc mouse.

A spare mouse is something I'm always short of. But I think I have a couple of micro switches in my stash somewhere.
I'll search the forum.
