So Ford have gone and put 8 speed CVT autobox's into its range, anyone got experience with this type of drive,it tends to get slated on the internet, mainly becuase of the way it delivers power when full speed acceleration is asked for, have you heard of the "rubber band effect" when you get soaring engine revs due to the tranmission lagging behind,i dont suppose thats a good idea in an overtake situation. The CVT does get praise for its delivery under sedate driving conditions.it is also a much smaller and lighter transmission than any of the alternatives, maybe thats why it is used,it saves weight.

This pic is from Toyota, but you get the drift with the "cones" and "rubber band".

Same idea as what's used in mopeds which is an extremely reliable idea BUT that's in a moped. Stick one in a car and jazz it up with electronics I'm not too sure how it will last.

The CVT is only in the Hybrid models isn't it. If it is the one that goes into the Mondeo it is very good - nothing like the original CVTs of years ago!

Somewhere in the Mondeo Mk5 Section is a great write up by Vlad, all about the Hybrid model and the cvt transmission

This gives a "general overview" of whats happened over recent years, nothing like the "old cvt" that us old uns remember, ha ha

The thread is quite old so there will surely have been further changes to current models

I remember when they tested this gearbox in the old Metro, it mostly worked though.

Complaints were that when taking up drive it could be snatchy, people thought it strange

when accelerating and finding the revs stayed the same whilst speed increased.

With modern computers controlling things that could be a bonus. Engine revs upto the

peak torque range and thats where you will get the best acceleration.

Have they cured the snatchy setoff issue though?

Don't fall for the 8 speed bit lol. I've had 3 Lexus hybrid cars with CVT boxes. Ok when you go to one from decades of manual gearboxes they are ruddy awful thats why my 1st lexus lasted 5 weeks. That's when I got the mk4.5 ecoboost (oh what a car, memories eh Trevor). I got another is300h after that and fell in love with it.
Now Kaz what you've read on the Internet is total rollox. Speaking of only Lexus mind the rate of acceleration was really close to that af the ecoboost. Now that surprised me. Yes the engine revved to the red line and the cars speed increased a very good rate no matter what the initial speed was. Now the is300h had about 204bhp. My next CVT car was the RX450h which had I think 250 or 260bhp. The acceleration was just that bit quicker considering the size of the cars was quite different.
CVT cars are very very good and if you've come from a world of automatic gearbox cars then you'll be quite and pleasantly surprised. Now the latest incarnation of CVT Lexus cars as in the UX250 now that car is something else. You put your foot down hard in that at 50mph and you are flung back in your seat. I had one for a day whilst my 2007 is250 was in for service. So like you do with a curtacy car you drive it like you stole it lol. 47 miles later upon its return I was asked if I'd like to know what might etc I got. I gulped. 52mpg and 47% of the time in battery alone.
So in essence I think to sum up the CVT. See it as riding a 2 stroke motorbike. They're great fun.

Great stuff Tazzman.

Oh those days of a Mk4.5 240ps 2 litre ecoboost Titanium X Sport. I still love that car I had. I don't see him but the guy who bought it off me only lives 5 miles from me and it is always garaged. It does around 2,500 miles per year!

As for cones and "rubber bands" Mick, the only rubber bands I see are the ones the postman drops on the drive most mornings, lol

@Trevor,ive been looking at the new Kuga 190ps (pure derv) AWD and the car has the 8 speed cvt.

@Tazzman,see ive never owned an auto of any type,so i am thinking i could hate the transmission like you did at first.

Wonder why Ford went the Japanese way instead of the German way.

Mick, can you give me a link to the Kuga information about it saying CVT.
A CVT trans does not have "gears"
For example, the S max and Mondeo eco blu diesels can now be had with an 8 speed transmission but in these vehs it is a normal torque converter type trans, an 8 speed derivative of Ford's 6F35 (6speed) mid range unit
