Had new rear tyres on the back of my Mk4 Mondeo in February, just before taking a caravan to the Algarve. Today I noticed that the inner edge of the rear tyres had canvas showing. I did have a lot of noseweight on the caravan, probably a lot more than I should have had. Would this account for the wear on the inside shoulder of the rear tyres after just 1000 miles?

I think the simple answer could be yes.

How were the tyres you took off?

But when you say a lot how much is a lot?.over 100kg?.

inner rear tyre wear is caused by incorrect toe

I would get the rear camber and suspension checked

how does the Car sit with no caravan on are the top of the wheels leaning in?

My car has done 36,000 miles and the back tyres are original fit and have towed a relatively big caravan more than 1,000 miles

Yes, you should not exceed the max noseweight for the towbar or rear suspension

whichever is lower. Having a lot of noseweight that far back and I expect a boot full

of everything including the sink your possibly over the rear axle load limit.

Yes, agree with Mark (Stonekeeper) and Purples comments.

If you were overweight you are illegal and dangerous to yourself and, more importantly, other people. Anyway bye the bye. There is a problem with your veh to do that to the rear tyres in such short mileage.

What is the age and total mileage of your veh.

Have the trailing arm bushes ever been done.

Assuming all bushes and shock absorbers are in excellent condition the next step is a full geometry check.

Every same model veh is different to what settings suit it best

With your problem I would set the rear toe in to manufacturers MAXIMUM permissible toe in

If you tow regular with heavy load (but NOT over limit) I would set the camber to to manufacturers MINIMUM Negative allowance

(I am not sure if rear camber is adjustable on Mk4 Mondeo)

Attached are manufacturers geometry figures for front and rear

Alternative if you run the car loaded more often than not load the boot up and

get the geometry checked with it loaded.

As above though any wear and play in the suspension could alter the settings

as you drive anyway.

Wonder if their equipment can check for that. Drive car onto the platform and set

everything neutral. Jack it up a few times and lower and check the figures each time

to ensure they reset back to the original figures.

Not quite the same as a drive on a typical road, maybe add in those shakers some

MOT places use?

It had some bushes replaced 6 months prior to going and the tyres were replaced a week or so prior to departing. The old tyres were evenly worn right across the entire surface.

I'm normally very fussy when loading a caravan, unfortunately, I didn't load it this time, it went down for my parents who loaded it. I was horrified when I looked inside and spotted all the stuff in ther, but by that point, had just been notified that our ferry sailing had been broughtr forward by 4 hours and had to leave.

Everything felt good while towing, I have always found it better to tow on the limit of the noseweight rather than just under it. I noticed yesterday that there's also some damage on the bump stops, so I suspect it had been bouncing onto them from time to time too on the way down.

Had three new tyres fitted yesterday, one front one that had virtually no wear but a bulge in the side wall, and two rears which had scuffed the inside shoulder. I'll keep a close eye on them and see if they start to wear unevenly.

Always been sceptical of 4 wheel alignment as I've read so many reports of people getting it checked at one place and having a totally different result to the e one another place gets.

My MOT is due (got the Covid-19 6 month extension though) so I'll see if they find anything worn when they check it for the MoT. Everything looked pretty good to me while it was up on the ramp last week.

There must be something wrong for the rear tyres to do what they did in such short mileage even if the tow weight set up was wrong.
It needs a proper 4 wheel alignment check and a good check/inspection

Regarding getting the geometry checked/reset - I would recommend using a place that has the "Hunter" Equipment which is a well respected bit of 4 wheel alignment kit
