So what is the best OBD II reader to buy and how much do they cost? I'm a bit of a novice with codes and electrical stuff so any info, however basic would be a great help.

Feeling more and more that I should have a go at diagnosing things myself after getting pretty vague responses from various garages; time to get clued up to avoid getting ripped off I think :)

Many thanks

USB version used mainly, but i do have an old cheapy wifi one that cost £3 or £4

which works on the Ford but not on a Renault it seems. Use the torque app

for that, looks like that does not get updated these days.

Vague responses because there are thousands of options. Avoid the cheapy 2 button

jobs which may show only one code even if there are more.

Android? Wifi or Bluetooth works, Apple then Wifi seems the better option. Laptop

or windows tablet with USB ports then a USB powered device should not have

connection issues.

So many ebay ones look identical but they are not. I had one and it would not connect

at the higher speed rquired for these cars.

Tunnelrat also sell 2 versions which they now give you the option FTDI = windows auto

installs the driver, CH340 you need to manually install that one from Chinese sites.
