Back box on my 2.0 petrol 2003 hatch was rotten. Holes in pipe and big hole in the box. Still didn't sound terrible but obviously needed doing. I called some of the exhaust centres and got quotes of £140 for an aftermarket box.

Last time I used one of these places to fit an exhaust on my old MK2 they fitted a real farter that sounded terrible and the flange on the pipe didn't line up so the system was twisted and hanging low. They used a giant cable tie to pull the exhaust up about 3 inches which I found out as it snapped on the way home.

So this time I opted for a cheap back box from ebay. £32 delivered. Thought I had a result. It arrived quick but I only just fitted it a few days ago (3 weeks after receiving it).

What a piece of crap! It sounds like a tank. I think someone forgot to put a baffle into it or worse. It's suffocating the engine as the power is right down as well. I can feel I'm having to push harder to get any performance at all. Every time I pull up somewhere I'm getting told I need a new exhaust! I tell them it is a new one and it's 'race-tuned'!

I've tried to complain (although I should have known what I'd get for £32 so it serves me right for penny pinching) but there is absolutely no record of my purchase in 'purchase history', no option to leave feedback, nothing. It's like it never happened! How the hell does that add up?

Anyway, I need another one but I don't want to throw good money after bad, and I won't go to the exhaust centres to get mugged for £140.

Has anybody here bought one from ebay that they can recommend?

EDIT... just checked my wife's ebay account and found I purchased it through that. I've messaged and asked how he wants to proceed. It states 2 year guarentee so let's see how he responds.

I bought a Klarius of Carparts4less in 2013 still good after 4 yrs then sold it, on a Ford FOCUS

i think a Klarius would be best of the ebay brands

Put a cheap cat. £61 EEC brand on Mondeo has lasted 16 mths so far and past mot twice.

Hi

If you paid for eBay item via PayPal you should be able to access order details via recent activity in that account.

Hey Peter.

I edited the OP to say I found that I bought the exhaust through my wife's ebay so that little mystery has been solved. Waiting for the seller's response now.

Most cheap exhaust boxes don't have so many baffles in them. On some cars this isn't too bad a thing, on others it's awful!

The bigger problems they tend to get are that they dont always fit. I've seen them with completely incorrect pipe bends, misplaced hangers, or just shorter than the originals. They can also rust out faster than the originals.

After 15 years my Mondeo exhaust boxes are in very good condition still. It's the pipes which are crusty. Unfortunately ford decided to make the exhaust system all one big piece so there's no way i can easily keep the boxes while replacing the pipe when it fails. Oh well.

Got no responses from the seller so hit the RETURN button on ebay and filled in a quick reason and hey presto... pre-payed postage label popped out of the printer.

I'm picking up an exhaust from our local motor factors tomorrow, £53 inc. I know it's still gonna be a cheapo but it cannot be as bad as this one!

I've since had a message from ebay to say the seller is accepting the return.

eBay stuff are hit and miss - like the nil hour failure on my expansion tank, almost cooked the motor. the vendor is trying to weasle out of responsibility. I'm trying to get the bank to recover it but it's been almost 5 months since payment (but less than 3 months since receipt of the item) so who knows - gotta try though.

Swapped the box over last night after work. What a difference!

The new box is twice the size of the old one and shaped to fit the gap perfectly. Also, the pipe on the old one went within 1/4 inch of a sensor near the ARB and I couldn't get it any further away. New one is about 1 inch away.

And it's now as quiet as it's ever been, with full power restored.

The ebay box was labeled Regal. I don't know if it was the wrong box, or just a crap box, but it's sorted now.
