Bought this 5 dr 2.0 dohc 16v rover just before lockdown...recomissioned in 2017 after being locked up in a garage and forgotten about since 2011..
Had alot of work done..new cambelt, new brake lines, new plugs and leads 4 new toyo proxe's..had to have new locks and ignition barrel and alarm module recoded..
Original key's lost after death of last owner..
Long and short of it is i know absolutley nothing about rover's..although i seem to of touched lucky..(luck of the irish)..
Car has 82k miles and a stack of paperwork..everything work's even the tilt slide eleccy sunroof.
Just 1 air bag and abs..that's it..nice..
No rust or rot full mot no advisories..
Go's really well and the ride although nothing near the mondog's composure.
Seems very grippy and can hit 65 in second gear.. 0-60 about 9 secs..
Can anyone shed any light on this car and it's engine..and of course any known problem's /fault's..
Any and all much appreciated...Des..
Thankyou...dont get me wrong ..i have bought this to keep the miles down on the ghia x..currently showing 57,757..
The rover has just 82,643....
No more mk3's my neck of the wood's, just 1 looked after st 220 in a neighbouring road...
Not seen any 400's...
I've owned my mondog since 09..
Hoping you all have a nice weekend...
Des.
By eck you've struck lucky with that 420. Blimey it takes me back when I was a stalwart Rover man.
I had the 420 GSi and it was a fabulous car. Fast for the time and surprisingly good on fuel. Handled very well.
As Purple stated. RUST was the main problem but you've got a rare gem.
Regular servicing is all it needs.
One thing I remember that went wrong was I lost gear change facilities. I had to drive the car a few miles home in 3rd. The culprit of the fault was the pin that joined the bottom of the gear shift rod to the rod to the gearbox. The pin had worked its way out. I just replaced the pin and even the clutch was fine. Other than that the 2.0 litre engine is a peach.
Hi Tazzman...I've never owned a Rover before..back in the 80s+90s there was a big rover dealership in Wallasey village, so were popular, every street had a smattering of various rover models..
Have not seen any since buying it wierdly..
The log book say's model..420i and absolutley nothing else. ?
It has air con, eleccy tilt/slide sunroof /leccy front windows / radio cassette /abs and 15 in steelies with all 4 original rover wheel trims..195/60 toyo proxes all round..and thats it..
It has replaced a very nice mk1 focus ghia i bought while the mondog was sick...My aunty was needing a car last xmass so £400 changed hand's..(yeah i lost a few bob but aunty's are aunty's...lol)..
So hopefully i will be keeping this pokey little rover hatch for good..Seems very grippy and power steering has a nice weighty feel..im thinking its a single mass flywheel too..big difference compared to the ghia x....
Hope you and your's are all okay in this current madness..
Des...
A Rover 75 with a standard 160bhp diesel? Noooo.
Standard was either 113 or 131 bhp. 160bhp was the 1.8 turbo petrol. If the 75 was a 160 then it had a remap or Ronbox on.
Yeah Mac you keep hold of that 45. It'll serve you well. Just look after it. Good spec you have too.
Yes. But did you know the turbo Rover used was superior to the one BMW used? Before I moved to Ford I had a MG ZT diesel for 7 years. Superb car and yes I fitted the RonBox and EGR bypass mod (so simple to fit) and it flew lol.
I dont know where you got that info about flicking a switch. You couldn't buy a 160 horse Rover 75 diesel unless the owner remapped it or put the very popular RonBox on it.
lol Mac.
Well Purple you've yet again taught me something ????
Blimey I think I'm still registered with the 75 owners club. They send me a happy birthday email every year. No its not my birthday
Been out in the mondog today, had to make a vet apointment up in Moreton..the jack russell's yearly mot..she is 13 but acts half that...ANYHOW...you know the felt liner under the bonnet, what is the purpose of this...noise suppresion...warm up quicker..
or to stop it blistering...
The Plassy engine cover i take off and put in the boot...but the feltliner can't be helping thungs in hot weather..
The fans were fine and never does the temp needle go past halfway
If there is a chance it can blister then it is staying put...but im pretty sure it does not help airflow...i don't know..i might be wrong.
I'd say the bonnet liner is to keep engine heat from the metal bonnet. If the liner wasn't there then imagine how hot the bonnet would be.
Hope your dog passed its MOT. Looks like you feed it well.

We have an engine that gets so hot that the engine cover needs a grill in it to stop the coil pack cooking itself, then we have a felt insulator above that.
Ive kept the felt, but refurb it now and then to keep it looking nice. Others remove them, and then leave everything on the bonnet as it left the factory, or they re route the washer jet wiring and tubing to make things look neat and tidy.
For clarity of the above for non Duratec 3.0 owners, the part that looks like a speaker grill is to allow ventilation for the coil pack. These engines get very hot very quickly.
Good point on refurbing the felt, mine has white stains around the edge's,do you have to renew the felt fasteners, they are plastic push in type thingies..
Summer months i put that engine cover in the shed on a nail on the wall, not a bad looking cover and that speaker like thing over the coil pack...err...unique...
Hope i spelt that right as my spelling is abysmal.Apparently..[emoji38]
The white stains are common, I give the felt a light rub with a damp cleaning cloth, then use black spray dye on the insulator to get it looking all black again.

I've got to be strict with her concerning her weight, about a month ago she weighed in at 10.3kg..she should be 7.5 to 8.0 kg...it's pitiful, she is into my coffee, goes nut's if i have a beef&mustard nudger, and have to feed my 2 cat's on shelve's and ledge's...so she is on a doggy diet.
I walk her every evening, have done all her life, though have occasionally missed the odd day, that has been down to foul weather with her being so close to the floor her undercarriage get really soaked and dirty in a downpour...
Usually 1 feed after walking, 1 pouch of chum and some expensive purina biccies,
and a dentestix once a day...all them titbits have stopped so she seem's a bit more active for it..
Her mammary tumour will hopefully be removed the end of august, it's not bothering her at the present time though, she act's half her age...some character, had a go at a husky outside the house the other day,had to physically grab them, me and the other owner did laugh about it though.
My Jack Russell has had her 'tuma' removed..Costly but worth every penny..
Better company than my nagging old "EX'...Vet commented on her strong heartbeat and energy all thing's considered..So back to her nutty self again..[emoji106]
