Hello everyone, I have a new to me 2005 Focus Mk2 2.0 Duratec which seems to behave quite strangely. I changed the oil and filters at 130,000 km when I bought it, and after 700 km the dipstick showed about 1/3 below max. Thinking I got an oil burner, I kept checking the oil almost daily, but the reading barely moved in almost 3000 km. Yesterday, after my 50 km commute, I checked it again and, to my surprise, it was almost at min. What could be the cause of this behaviour? I was thinking it might be the PCV valve or a split vacuum hose, as I also have a strange idle sometimes (momentarily rises to 1200-1300 rpm for a couple of seconds when braking at low speeds). I visually checked the hoses under the intake manifold and there was one braided hose which was a bit oily (not sure what hose it is, it's very tight down there). Would other issues, such as oil control rings or valve stem seals, lead to this kind of intermittent oil consumption? Forgot to mention that the oil also smells a bit weird (like unburnt gases, but I might also just be imagining things).

To get accurate information you must do an oil level check in identical situations.
Veh should be left on level ground, overnight. Then remove dipstick, wipe clean and redip.
Checking levels any other way is only a rough guide

Checked it yesterday after letting the car sit for an hour, then checked again this morning, there was no major difference, maybe 1-2 mm max. Previous checks were also pretty consistent with each other.

Well, do another 400kms (250 miles) and check level again - after standing overnight on a level surface
