it really depends on what you want the car to do. easiest swaps for a bit more power are from other vehicles of similar age. assuming this is the Orion version from late 1986-late 1990/early 1991, you could get pretty much any engine from any escort or orion from 1980 onwards and it would pretty much be a straight swap (1.3, 1.4 or 1.6 CVH or 1.6/1.8 diesel would all be options) and would only require the engine mounts/gearbox mounts, ECU (on EFI or RS versions as well as the associated wiring) to physically operate. ideally you would take the hubs and gearbox/driveshafts with the new engine, especially if swapping to XR3/RS turbo engines from the 1.3.

Later model Escort/orion engines will bolt straight in on later (1990/91 onward) with the same issues of needing the ECUs etc but with the added complication of needing PATS reprogrammed on PATS equipped cars (or a standalone ECU fitted)

later engines can be fitted in earlier cars but thats not something ive ever attempted to do myself, and a common option on earlier cars is to fit the ZVH hybrid engines which, by all accounts, takes a Zetec bottom end and marries it to a CVH cylinder head but, again, not quite as straight forward.

basically without knowing what you want the car to do, what sort of budget you are willing to spend etc, its a near impossible thing to say definitively. pick an engine. it can be MADE to fit with enough time, effort and money!

Rover V8 if your willing to convert it to rear wheel drive also?

Although insuring it maybe an issue. Garage had to run it on trade plates as

insurers tended to say no thanks.

What are you looking for in an engine swap?  More power but having to wire in

a new ECU or drop in simplicity with a carb engine?

2L zetec would give it great power to weight and be quite fuel efficient with the

lower weight of the car.

Zvh turbo would provide a fair bit of entertainment with not silly amounts of hassle.
