What ho one and all,

I have a 2003 Mk3 Mondeo, TDCI with 177k on the clock.  It is in very good condition, no rust, runs well, just passed the MOT, etc.

Today, I was involved in a minor fender bender.  Stopped at a crossing in front of Guildford Hospital when a taxi driver decided to reverse into my drivers side, rear door.  The damage is relativley minor, but it is dented.

I now don't know the best route forward as having spoken with my insurance company (have not started a claim) they have advised that their 'reputable' repairer is likely to replace the entire door, and if the cost is greater than 60% of the value of the car, the car will be written off. I could then buy is back and receive the difference.  i think that sort of repair will be greater than 60%!

I don't really want to go this route since the damage is totally non-write off; it's just cosmetic.  The other way is to get a repair quote and present it to the other driver, and hope that he pays, and if he does not, go the County Court route.

Not having had to make any insurance claim whatsoever (apart from a cracked windscreen X years ago) what is the advice on my way forward?

Many thanks and toodle pip

Rex

As above really. No matter who's to blame it will put your Insurance premium up. If I was in your situation (which I have been) I'd speak to the taxi company about getting them to replace the door

Claim directly from the taxi driver/his insurance. If he notified them and admits

fault they may work with you to keep costs down.

Hi

I needed a replacement door glass a while back for my MK3 ST, only cost me £10 for a complete front door in perfect condition at a local breakers. This allowed me to swap out glass at my leisure then dump door shell at local recycling point. In my case only needed glass so any door of any colour was acceptable.

You only have to unplug cables, remove small bolt to release door stay then release and tap out two hinge pins.

What colour is your car, hopefully a popular colour and do you have any local breakers where you can obtain panels.

I bet a second hand door will be pretty cheap. See if you can find one the right colour (even better, same spec) then call the taxi company and say you found a door for £100 so there's a pint for your hassle in it.

Gentlemen,

Thanks for the replies, which is more than Ican say for the other driver.

I have been searching with Mr Google, and there are certainly a few doors avaialable, but I hve yet to find one in Ink Blue.  There is a large scrappy not too far from me, and i know for a fact (because I visit ocassionally) that they have some Mk3s with opening, undamaged o/s/r doors.  But, I have not looked at the condition as I did not need a door.

In the hoopla of the incident, I got his name and e-mail address but the parking guys asked me to move (blocking traffic) and when I had done so, he had left.  No reply to my e-mail yet, but he is a registered local taxi driver and I understand he is legally obliged to inform his licensing authority of ANY traffic incident.

Also hopeful that I will get the CCTV footage of the 15 seconds I was stationary.  If he is non-cooperative, then I will get the repair done and go the county court route.  That will hit his insurance and taxi license!

Just a heads-up.  Received a price from the bodyshop of around £500 to fix and respray the door.  At that price, an insurance company will certainly write the car off!

I have been browsing FleaBay, etc, and although there are numerous doors avaiable, none that I have found are in the right colour.  Does anyone have any idea how I can source the correct colour?

Secondly, when  bought the car 15 years ago, I spent time injecting Waxoyl into all seams.  If I were to buy a door off FleaBay (or another site) I have no way of knowing the general condition?  It could look good on the outside but have all intenal seams rusting?  Presumably, without a visual check, ther is no way to pre-check?

Finally, the Facebook group idea seems reasonalbe but I am not a FB user and for whatever reason, am somewhat reluctant to sign up.  I don't have a 'smart' phone, just a complete old 'dumb' phone.  Can I sing up on the web from my computer or is FB purely a mobile thing?

Just to be sure, what door do you want, can you describe the year, window trim and whether you have normal or factory tinted glass (a very mild tint)
Does your car have bump strips on the doors?
Can you post up a pic of the door you want?
Perhaps I can post the pic on Facebook on your behalf.
You can put your vehicle info at the bottom of your posts to give details to help others know what you drive :)
