We did get some strange noises out of it but not any det/pinking/pre-ignition as far as I'm aware. Again, another good reason to see the pistons.

Pulling away from standstill with a good amount of steering angle would produce an unusual racket from underneath, almost like those rainsticks with the beads falling through a tube, but on steroids.

Thinking about it, we did get another noise accelerating hard on a couple of occasions but it was more like a loose exhaust heat shield vibrating. And this was on a variety of fuel, it's only ever had BP, BP Ultimate, Esso and Tesco Momentum.

Does not sound like you had any pinking/pre ignition.

Pinking sounds similar to a couple of loose nuts/bolts rattling in the air cleaner box that was fitted to carburettor cars.

I know on the Mondeo eco petrol with powershift you can occasionally get pinking when the driver "catches the box out" or vice versa - the box keeps the revs really low and the driver is giving loads of throttle (really the box should change down one but it doesn't) you then have unacceptable low revs with high torque resulting in pinking.

When pinking starts one should immediately ease back on the throttle or change down, as if you don't, it will "encourage" piston/ring/land failure.

I had contact with a guy in the states who had piston failure on his 2L Focus ST.

He admitted that, due to the great torque from the engine he only ever really drove round in  either 5th or 6th gear, so it was continually abused running at very low speed, very low revs and he just used massive throttle to make it accelerate.

Under those conditions the engine continually pinked but he totally ignored it up until engine failure.

He admitted he thought the "rattle" he had had from new was just a couple of loose exhaust nuts and bolts under the bonnet.

To top it all, when it went back to the dealer he left all the mods on it as well as the remap, and then started moaning because Ford declared the warranty null and void

Well, back to the dealer today for a chat.

Got to have a look at the engine myself and, not a thing visible. Head was off but all 4 bores were spotless apart from some of the honing marks from manufacturing. Pistons were pristine, no carbon and no pitting from det/pre-ignition.

Valves were just as clean and seated well and no oil or coolant had been lost.

Ford authorised a new bottom end, which is in the works, but the dealer is fighting to get a whole new engine for us.

I can understand them not pulling the piston now, its Ford footing the bill for everything so they won't get paid for any extra tearing down.

I think now we just need to focus on getting a hire car that the Mrs. can actually drive without it crippling her and just accept that we won't get the Kuga back till late July early August :(

Hi

There is no logic to Fords actions with this failure on a low mileage engine. On verification from dealer that components had failed it would be sensible to minimise final costs by simply replacing with a complete new unit.

Then collect faulty engine to strip, inspect and diagnose cause of failure, unless Ford already know cause of failure.

It would seem that the ideal of expecting a manufacturer to honor a 3year seems wide of the mark.

Hi

Is it possible to get assistance from Motability?

Motability are supposedly chasing up the dealer but having spoken to the dealer the hold up is getting the bottom end built and sent from Germany to Daventry, and then down to Sussex. What also doesn't help is Ford closing for 2 weeks summer holiday :(

Book time for changing the bottom end is 30+ hours, an engine swap is 12hours. So yeah, it does seem a bit stupid as Ford are having to pay for the block/engine, shipping, labour and the hire car which is certainly racking up a bit now.

Mark, these piston ring/land failures are unreal.

As I have said before I have not seen an engine yet with a damage bore, although when you get the piston out it is impossible to understand why not.

You said a "wet test" reveals the fluid poured down the bore just runs straight down. - clearly that is a failed piston rig/land.

It will look like the photo I posted earlier. Why they wont pull the pistons is beyond me - 30 minutes tops.

Changing a bottom end 30+ hrs, ha ha ha, thats nearly 4 days .

You only get 24 hours for remove and refit Jag E Type V12 engine and strip and rebuild to replace all pistons!!!!!

Having seen all the euro emissions crap bolted to it I can honestly believe it would take a stupid amount of time to strip a lump down to swap to fit a replacement block. And the 4x4 slushbox is a big old lump to remove and refit too.

That's absolutely nothing to a V12 Jag, mister, they have miles of emission piping. No worries, I am sure they will get on with it in a modern day manner!!!
Still, there is nothing you can do about it.
That's the trouble with 99% of these modern day dealers. Anymore than a service plus pads and discs money earner and they don't know where to turn

Well, the dealer has pulled a bit of a cheeky one!!!

After Ford said they were only supplying a bottom end they went to bat for us and..... a whole new engine was supplied and in pretty quick time too. Rumours are it may have been "borrowed" from another dealers order but shhh :D

Just picked the car up this morning and the Mrs. is over the moon with it and not just because they chucked in half a tank of petrol and "cleaned" it. Will be interesting to see how things go with the new engine as, at the moment, an ongoing noise issue appears to have been fixed as well but time will tell.
