Hi

I have just finished spending a fortune on our old Mk 2 fiesta diesel bodywork/paint and now the gear lever has just fallen through the floor!  There's nothing wrong with the floor or the four bolts that seem to hold the remote assembly in place.  The problem seems to be with the rubber parts.  It looks like there is an odd shaped rubber doughnut still attached to the remote/gearlever and a rubber part still attached to the car but that they should somehow be bonded together?? Any ideas on what has gone wrong and which parts I need to fix it would be so appreciated.  Any ideas on where to get the parts would be even better!!

Many thanks

Mark

from memory there were 2 variations on this part. fastened to the floor via rubber blocks, the other was a nut/stud at each corner, more or less directly to the floor with a seal in between the rote selector unit, and the floor. the lengths of the linkage rods may be different but I believe the basic 'box' on the bottom of the gearstick was the same as the ones used in the escorts of the same era, which also had the 2 different types. those old 1.6 diesel engines go on forever. I wish id bought the one I looked at a few years ago now!

Hi thanks for the info.  Mine is definitely the one with the four studs at each corner.  I've now taken it all apart and it looks to me as if the mounting has a hard rubber/plastic insert and a separate softer rubber doughnut which sits in the hole but ABOVE it with a "C" clip to stop the softer rubber doughnut from travelling up the gear lever.  My rubber doughnut seems to have become too soft and has pushed right through the hard plastic retainer and so the whole thing flops onto the floor!

I'm going to see if I can locate a new rubber doughnut but the advise that it may be the same as for that era Escorts is a great idea - thank you!  Yep that old 1.6 diesel was a great engine- we still get around 75 MPG on a run!!!  And it has NEVER failed to start - not once in all these years - hence the decision to "save" the poor thing!

How many standard one family owner diesel Mk2 Fiestas will make it?  Almost all the few remaining panels are immediately scooped up by the XR2 boys so it was a real struggle to get the body repair panels.

Thanks so much for your help.
