The defeat system also takes into account the bonnet being open and no movements of the steering wheel. However it is only on diesels that use the selective catalytic reduction system, or uretha injection https://en.m.wikiped...lytic_reduction

I think you mean urea, and in the VW case it is specifically not for cars using that system. VW didn't want to use that system ("AdBlue") on US cars because they were pushing the idea that their clean diesels were as easy to run as petrol engines. Instead VW used standard EGR technology, but it seems it had to cheat to make it work.


It's significant that the new VW 2.0 TDI does use AdBlue.
