Hi all,

I got this afternoon for the first time on my 1995 1.3 HCS-powerd Mk3 Fiesta unusual noise sounding like a leaky exhaust pipe, but coming from the engine bay.  This directed me to the exhaust manifold and the gaskets between the engine head and the manifold, which look in a rather poor condition, mainly for cylinder nr1. However the process of disassembling the exhaust manifold from the motor head to replace the 4 exhaust manifold gaskets looks easy in theory, the rusty 8 nuts that coupling the manifold to the motor head directed me to the TalkFord Forum as to get some inspiration from you guys that already suceesfully disassembled any piece of an HCS engine...

So, could you share your hints on the job before I start working on these nuts and exhaust manifold gaskets?  Also, could you share your expertise on whether it is required or not to firstly disassemble the exhaust manifold from the exhaust line/CAT before proceeding with those 8 nuts?

Thank you in advance for your answers!

Kind regards,

Renaud

you should be able to unbolt the manifold from the engine and then just move it out the way with the rest of the exhaust attached.

Thank you,

I confirm it is possible to unbolt and move the manifold forward with no other part of the exhaust line disassembled.

However they looked very rusty, a standard 1/4" drive ratchet did the job to unbolt the 8 rusty 13mm bolts, with no further damage to them.

Just one special: the 2 bolts that hold the heat-shield mounted on the exhaust manifold are 3/8" (9.53mm) bolts on my Spain-made mk3.5 Fiesta. However, this may to vary from car to car: a quick check on a Germany-assembled Fiesta mk3 demonstrated they also did use standard 10mm bolts.  Mind this before you try to unbolt those (seized) bolts.
