If you have a carbon monoxide tester (a lot of people have them in the house now) put it in the car and see if its CO. If it is, then its an exhaust leak which is highly dangerous. I would look at the exhaust recirculation if it is fitted on your car as these have been known to leak on a whole variety of cars.

Are there any particular benefits of going for an induction cone filter over a replacement k&n / green etc panel filter in the air box on these cars?

On my Leon, I found that a replacement panel filter with modified intake feed worked best, but then that was in a very crowded engine bay!! Cone flter sounded good tho...

an mk3 air box can easily flow 250hp AND has a cold air feed from the inner wing...
we just put a replacement bmc filter in it and delivers +200hp now (2.2tdci)
with a cone filter you allways suck warm air at take off
in a while we will sell a good cold air feed for the mk3's airbox (ramair style feed from the bumper with a water seperator

Did you reset the ECU?

I've read that to get the most out of any engine mod you must do this.

How much does insurance cost you on that then?? Cost me enough to insure a 2.0 tdci lx 115ps but I'm only 18 so that might be why.

Is there any noise difference between the standard panel filter, k&n panel filter and k&n 57i induction kit? For the 130bhp TDCi im talking about

i had a k&n induction kit on my last car (a vec-c) and it threw up a spanner light, when i took it to vx the code said that the maf was passing too much air causing the mix to lean out. so obviously when i got the mondeo the first thing to go on was a k&n panel filter. anybody had problems with the ford's maf?
