Your Mk4 interior lights.. are they the same shape as MK3 then? Straight swap?

 

I've been looking at Focus Mk2/3 lights for the ambient lighting

Yep, same fittings, you will have to change the alarm sensors on the front to those from the old unit, as for power feed, mine come on with the side lights. Mine is picked up from the cigar lighter socket light.

 

At night time there is a warm glow over the gear change at the front & at the rear, just over in front of the back of rear seat.

 

Best seen in the flesh than trying to take pictures

So not just a simple plug in and they light up with illumination.

I could just leave it I think.

Although I do have an electric sunroof so could piggy back from the switch for that (constantly illuminated)

Since you have the sunroof, then yes you could pick up the feed from the switches.
