Why is my Sync 3 every time looking for WiFi networks?

Since a few days I have a 2019 Mondeo with Sync 3 and I've been searching the manual for any reference to the message that comes on the monitor everytime I start the car.

It tells me that Sync 3 can look for uppdates when connected to a WiFi network.

But how can I stop that message?

Does anyone know?

Hi Ricke

Good to hear you have it sorted, any ideas why unit suddenly started searching?

Not sure if it already did that when I about a week ago did my test drive of the car. But when leaving the dealer last Friday afternoon it was looking for wifi networks.
At that time I didn't really care to much as it was more fun to take my new car for a longer drive towards home.
I now have a reservation next Monday with the same Ford dealer for an update of the cars Sync software. I hope all will then be sorted out, having the newest maps and all.

Hi Guys

Just seen this thread, and was wondering as i encountered the same problem as Ricke above, when i bought my 2019 mondeo Vignale back in August 2020, also just seen post by steve above with the link to the sync update,

i have entered my vin number and it says to carry out the update, thought this seems a bit strange to have to update already as car only made in 2019, so should i or shouldnt i carry out the update ?.

also i assume that if its in the wifi mode and it finds an update would this be the same update as to having to download and update via a flash drive, ( as said about in link by Steve ) as in my case ii have scanned in wifi mode in car and no updates were found, hope what im asking makes sense, as im a bit uncertain of whats what and what i should do for the best,

Hi LM,

I certainly don't have all the answers, but a few observations might help...

I've had my Mondeo for just short of 3 years, and it's needed 4 updates in that time. Even those that start out as map updates describe themselves as software tweaks during the update process, and list the features they're updating.

I've never tried updating directly over WiFi in the car, and I suspect the option is limited to small modifications, because full updates run to more than 20GB.

I doubt anything is likely to fail for want of a software update, because there must be a lot of owners who've never bothered, and there are still plenty of Mondeos still running around! I like to keep things up-to-date, but that's just me.

My local Ford agent no longer do software updates. They say they take too long, and are liable to go wrong if interrupted. They also have to leave the car running for up to 2 hours for the update to complete, which can create a range of different problems. However, they still recommend doing them yourself.

That's why I raised the point with Ricke, but his dealer had agreed to do it as part of the purchase deal, so it makes sense in his case.

Anyway, if you do decide to run the update, then make sure you follow the instructions to the letter! If you do, it works fine. Some functions are switched off during the update (e.g. heated windscreen, most voice commands) so make sure it completes correctly.

Hope that helps a bit.

Hi thanks for your input on this question, when you say follow the update to the letter, if installing, and all will be fine the only thing that would worry me would be if a prompt would read not in simple English language, as I’m not fully up on computer language, which is all just a lot of Gobbleygook to me and therefore I feel I could cause more harm than good and end up with a nightmare to try and sort out whatever I’ve created trying to update the system, if you get my drift.

I understand what you're saying, and I'm sorry if I've alarmed you, but there's nothing technical or complex about the process you have to follow. Basically, I meant don't do anything to interrupt the process, like taking the USB stick out while it's updating!

The instructions can be found on the download page that comes up when you respond to this page:

https://www.ford.co.uk/owner/resources-and-support/sync-bluetooth/update#/status/

I can't move on to the next page, because my system is up-to-date, so the option's not available to me, but the next page describes, in plain English, the process you have to follow. Have a read through, and decide whether you're comfortable with it.

I don't want to be the one to put you off!

Hi again, don’t worry you did not alarm me, I alarm myself with all things related to computer programming downloading etc etc, so much so that I think I tend to shy away from things of this nature, just think I need a bit of confidence in doing so, and hopefully in time I won’t feel so worried to have a go.

Just One other question i would like to ask, seeing as im a complete Dinosaur when it comes to aspects of this nature,

im waiting arrival or a new USB Memory Stick and have a friend of mine that uses computers everyday for work purposes, ( so no problems for him as he knows far far more than me ) hes going to format the stick for me to exFat as per the Sync update instructions, but hes also asked me do i need it formatted to FAT or FAT32,

( but i havent the faintest )

have looked back over the update instructions but it only says to format to exFAT, theres no reference made to either FAT or FAT32 so if anyone could tell me i would be most greatful, but please dont go into detail of exFAt FAT or FAT32 as this will only go completely over my head.

You need the stick formatted to exFAT. Not FAT32. They are two different things, as your friend should know. Either he's teasing you by asking irrelevant questions, or he doesn't know as much as he's led you to believe!

Just like to say a big thank you to all that has helped me on the update procedure,

just managed to carry out the update with no issues whatsoever,

so seems im not such a Dinosaur after all, and has given me more confidence in doing this type of stuff in the future

Thanks again Guys.

For those interested, there's a new software update for SYNC-3 named SYNC3_2807651462_Update.zip available from the update site.

This one apparently takes only 30-35 minutes to complete, so I'll be giving it a go in the near future.

Just been out to run the update. It took about 10 minutes, so I was able to shorten my planned trip.

Hi Again Guys,

As previously mentioned ive recently carried out the software update thats available from here

https://www.ford.co....etooth/update#/

but not sure if this has caused a little gremlin or glitch or something alike,

have noticed that the clock that shows the time currently have mine in 24 hr mode, seems to alter itself by 1 hour and seems like it only does this between ariound 11 am and 12 noon

ie the current time is say for example 12 35 but readout is reading 13 35 have altered it several times with all the settings that are available for clock/time settings this corrects it until the next time it happens again,

only seems to happen when out driving around this time of day displays 1 hr advancement, never noticed time reading wrong at any other time of day,

Example if out driving and time is reading as said 1 hr plus if i do not alter and then say park up at home and say then dont go out for a hour or 2 the clock then reads correct time very strange i feel

This problem has only seemed to occurred since ive done the above software update and was wondering if others have experienced this or know if this is connected to the update or know how to stop it occurring.

Sorry, I can't reproduce your problem with the clock - is your car newer than mine (2018)?

I can't see any options in my version that might cause the issue you describe.

However, there's a more recent software update than the one you installed, as I described on 7 February, so there's a chance that it contains a fix for your clock problem.

Is the time set to sync with the GPS signal? Enable/Disable that and see if it cures it.

Further to the above, have just entered my Vin number and started to download the update from the ford site,

currently downloading but saying its opening in 6 hours.

Is this correct ? ? to wait this long before i can load on usb stick and plug into car.

Have just noticed that download has failed ( network error ) so reloading again from ford site,

and have noticed its stating that download can take a total of 80 mins to load,

thought this was just a quick update which took around 10 mins to do.

feel very confused to whats going on at the mo, can anyone explain please thanks.

Did you confirm your earlier update back to the update site? If not, it would assume you haven't done that update, and would include it in the new download.

That's not necessarily the issue, though. The file you download will contain fixes for all model years, and your car will pick out the ones it needs. So there might be a lot of redundant data on it.

Check the size of the file - mine was 2.61GB, which might take a while to download if your broadband is busy doing something else...

As far as im sure i did confirm that i had completed the update last time around. ( as far as i can remember i just had to tick a tick box to confirm ) so im assuming this was correct.

have just checked the size of the file and its 21.1 GB have currently downloaded 8.5 GB this is after about 2 hours

and thats just with two windows open 1 this site and 2 the ford site which the download came from.

That's a very big file, so I'd guess it contains an updated map. Probably best to persevere with it. Be prepared for a long drive when you present it to SYNC3, though!
