Hi. I have had four petrol Mondies, which I love, but am considering switching to a Mk4 diesel for reasons of economy. I currently drive a 2.0 petrol Mk3 Ghia X which shows 33mpg and costs £300 to tax!
I am interested to know whether diesels are as quick (or quicker) than petrol and is there much performance difference between 1.8 and 2.0 diesels?
Also is it true that cam belts on a Mk4 diesel are expensive to replace (never had to do it on a Mk3)?
Fantastic feedback, peeps. Exactly what I was hoping for. Many thanks.
I think I am leaning towards a 2.0 Mk4, balancing performance (just general as oppose to racing) with running costs. I have seen figures of 48 mpg for the diesel as opposed to the actual 33 from my petrol! I will be very happy with 48 mpg or anything around this.
Also tax for the 2.0 is £200 and £160 for the 1.8 so I can live with this if the performance is noticeably better.
The mk4 2.0 litre diesel I had I found lacking in both power and economy. Never once did I manage near 40 mpg. After a remap and dpf gutted the power was very noticeable and economy was near 40 mpg.
My 2nd mondy was the tit x sport 2.2 diesel (mk4.5) manual box. That was an effing quick car but economy was poor lol. That car compared very well to the mk4.5 tit x sport econoboost in acceleration and economy. My current and 3rd mk4.5 is the 2.2 diesel tit x sport auto. Best car of the 3 mk4.5 cars I've had. Low to mid 40's mpg on a run. Short trips which I do most I get mid 30's. Ruddy quick car. Pulls like a train even with 5 in and boot full of luggage.
To throw a spanner in the works. If it's economy you want and a none Ford then I recommend the Lexus is300h. I never got less than 50 mpg in the one I use to have. And a tenner road tax.
Thanks again, peeps, for the feedback. A picture is emerging that less tax is due to less emissions which means less performance lol (there are exceptions to all 'rules' of course). I was hoping to start car hunting tomorrow/Monday but now my car has developed a weepy caliper. Obviously I can't sell it like this so I hope the car I have my eye on in Autotrader will wait for me.
Why indeed. I was just quoting from figures on paper which is why I said there are exceptions to all rules. I think I will just have to take the plunge into the world of diesels and see how it goes. Even if mileage is similar to petrol then at least tax will be less.
Well I am impressed. Bought a Mk4 2.0L diesel 161 on a 60 plate today.
The journey to collect was 90 miles to Peterborough using mostly A roads with some B roads my end and city center the other end. I reset the petrol Ghia X trip meter when I set off and got 38mpg average on the way there!!! The diesel on the way back showed average of 57mpg!!! That is a 50% improvement - and £145 tax too. I think this one is a keeper.
(having said that I was sad to see the old girl go but I have filled up over 50 times so far this financial year so something had to change).
Well done. You must be light footed lol. Enjoy your new motor.
