Problem: In winter found heavy steering when parking on 10 year old 2005 StreetKa. The P/S fluid was at Max level but a very dark colour and the yellow reservoir cap had road dust around it. It may have gained moisture and was affected when temperature is near freezing outside in winter. The dark colour is due to debris. No sign of any leak but apparently air can leak in over the years.
Few hints about changing P/S fluid exist for Ka which has similar parts for Streetka.
Also Ford Spec per the Manual is an old spec and is expensive.
Solution: Carlube ATF-Q3 covers this and other specs and is inexpensive.

Required:
Carlube ATF-Q3 (ÂŁ10 / litre XTE100) - (Red coloured fluid) You need 1 to 2 litres to pump through.
Meat Baster (Wilko ÂŁ1)
Clear Plastic Tube 1.2 metres
Plastic Insert connector for plastic tube & Return Rear Hose
Wooden Dowel (or similar plastic blank to plug emptied reservoir hole - underneath only)
Old 2 litre bottle (to catch old fluid)
Pliers plus a Small temporary support for under Reservoir when it is lifted up 30 degrees

Now the actual procedure - allow 30 to 40 mins
To completely change the P/S Fluid in one go in simple steps:
1. Preparation:
- Ensure battery has a good charge but do not start car.
- Remove Fuse 19 (Box below right hand dashboard) allows starter but no fuel/ignition
- Undo top nut holding reservoir to to top of chassis.

2. Slightly messy bit (I use barrier cream, some prefer plastic hand gloves)
- Put some floor protection / drip tray under inside front wheel below P/S Reservoir
- Open P/S Reservoir and use Meat Baster to remove as much fluid as possible.
- Ensure fluid does not rise above the glass top to prevent messy leak on rubber squeezer!)
- When Reservoir nearly empty pull it up 33 degrees and put a temporary support underneath it.
- You need to keep some old fluid in to prevent air going into the pump in front.
- Now use pliers to ease off & loosen low pressure butterfly clip on rear (Return) hose under reservoir
- Get ready for a small spillage - place rag under this area and pull off rear (Return) hose
- Put plastic insert in Clear tube and return hose & other end of plastic tube in old bottle on floor
- Shape wooden dowel to size with Stanley knife and insert it underneath reservoir rear return intake
- Now add new red fluid up to but not overfilling
- Double Check its OK to Start Starter to turn over P/S pump
- Sit in drivers seat & check you can see clear tube contents
- Start Starter for exactly 10 seconds only - dark old fluid will go down to bottle - stop if it stops
- Check and refill reservoir with new red fluid (Check how much new red you have left)
- Start again - needs at least another 10 secs or less until red fluid appears in the tube, then Stop
3.Finally (after Transfusion)
- Take off tube & blanking dowel & Replace the Rear Return Hose back & Butterfly clamps check no leaks
- Return Reservoir to normal position and top up fluid to max only. Screw holding nut and cover reservoir
- Secure old fluid (before taking to oil recycling local tip) and use rags to clean up.
- Remove all tools etc from engine compartment
- Turn engine one last time and re-check for leaks
- Refit fuse 19 & Start engine
- Drive front wheels onto some plastic bags to reduce friction and turn wheels lock to lock without stopping at full lock to prevent wear until any air is freed.
This was unnecessary with mine as no air was allowed to enter by keeping reservoir topped up during the procedure. Power Steering now light as a feather.
Took 30 minutes to do actual work. I bought a 4.5 litres (ÂŁ20) but only used over 1 litre of it.
