Hi to all.
As the title says i have an issue with the temperature gauge on my wifes Focus. Car is 2001 on a Y plate. The gauge works but oddly, when you drive the car the gauge reacts to the speed of the car the faster you go the higher it climbs however never above middle. Slow down and down it comes. I personally drove it this morning a good few miles and she doesn't miss abeat but this has me confused. Water is circulating fan cuts in but gauge just does not behave as it should. I would have to say that compared to my car the heater doesn't get as hot as it should in the car but i drive a totally different car to a ford so hard to say how hot these should get. I'll leave it there and see what you guys reckon with scope to add further details if neccesary.
Many Thanks

on a silvertop, check the connector under the thermostat housing towards the exhaust manifold. its the top pic, circled in red with a ? in this topic. http://www.talkford....mostat-housing/

blacktops might look like this one in the top pic of this topic (note circlip), http://www.talkford....r-coolant-leak/ its a 2 in 1 sensor, but might have same as silvertops gauge sensor.

unplug the connector and reconnect it a few times. see if it sorts it.

Thanks for the reply. I've had a look today and strangely the car has neither of those sensor in either of those places??? I have seen elsewhere that these don't have water temp sensors but instead have cylinder head temp readings. I don't know maybe someone can clarify? I did however find two sensor like looking thingys. One which i belief to be on the side of the water pump left hand front side of engine and the other right hand rear of engine at the top. I disconnected both and gave them a little clean and replaced (removing them made no difference to the temp gauge reading when car warmed up), fired the car up and allowed it to warm up. Gauge rose to halfway and seemed steady hmmm i thought could this be progress? Went for a spin and it stayed nicely at halfway. This was with the temp switch setting in the car on hot and blower of. Toward the end of the run i switched the blower to number 1 and the gauge dropped but not as bad as usual probably to a quarter (it normally goes to the first lines under normal driving) with the blower still on i finished the journey and when sat on the drive revved the car and held it, almost immediately temp went back to halfway and i sat playing with the heat control and blower to see if anything would happen. A slight fluctuation, but again nowhere near as bad as normal AND increased heat from the vents. Obviously this will need to be monitored over a few journeys but am now wondering if it may simply be a thermostat issue?? Is it also right that the fan kicks in when blower set to number 1? i seem to remeber reading that its a clearing aid for the windscreen but if this is carries on whilst driving would it not cool the water continously?

This look like the underbonnet view of your car?

the black arrow is pointing to the thermostat housing, which is where the sensor(s) is found.

presume the cam cover says zetec on it like in pic, (earlier engines have aluminium covers, whereas this is black)

Yep that looks pretty much the same but i promise you now there ain't nothing that has wires going to it on the thermostat housing. I will get some pictures of the area and post them on here when i get a chance. Definately says Zetec on it and is black in colour. Hmmm this is strange could something be amiss??????

Here are some pictures of the thermostat and the sensors i have found. The car still seems to be holding up although i haven't driven it any real distance. Sorry about the links but don't know how to add photos from flicker.

thats a strange one for me then, escort zetecs and mondeo zetecs had them on the housing, can you see any other plugs on the cooling system, that look like the above pic plug?

have done a bit of digging, apparently you have a cylinder head temp sensor, located on the back of the engine, near the alternator i believe. Apparently they are brass and a bit of a pig to get at (?remove alternator?) there should be the grey connector on it, for identification.

Thanks for that will have a good look once the weather brightens up. I had heard that they had cylinder sensors, strange idea if you ask me but then so was the fact that the clutch cylinder was inside the gearbox causing £400 worth of work when it gave up and started leaking. Cheers again for all your help.
